Social Justice and Diversity

Social Justice and Diversity

Led by Prof Shan Simmonds

Social justice and diversity are inscribed within the multifaceted and interconnectedness of all spheres (economic, social, political and environmental) to encourage inclusive and equitable perspectives on the various forms of instability and turmoil impacting our glocal (local and global) world. This includes understanding our world as inscribed in the knowing, being and doing of humans and the more than human (nature and technologies). It necessitates that education must rise to the challenges of our time and be committed to raising awareness of the ongoing and multiple injustices that persist. Our intellectual work, research endeavours and community engagements in education strive towards embracing and problematising diversity in its most nuanced sense (namely, religion, culture, race, ethnicity, age, health, [dis]ability, nationality, citizenship, language, geography, gender and sexuality) to (re)imagine education in new and sustainable ways that are socially and ethically responsive. This subarea group is dedicated to the social justice and diversity plights infiltrating education such as (but not limited to): coloniality, unemployment, human trafficking, neoliberalism, epistemicide, geopolitical shifts, technological advancements, environmental crises, sustainability, war/genocide, xenophobia, asylum, global conflicts, global citizenship, and gender-based violations.
