Education, Management, Humanities and Social Sciences Research Ethics Committee (EMHS-REC)
The EMHS-REC is a registered research ethics committee with the National Health Research Ethics Council (NHREC) of the National Department of Health. The purpose of the EMHS-REC is to promote research ethics by ensuring that participants are protected and to ensure that research integrity and the highest ethical standards are maintained at the NWU.
The role and function of the EMHS-REC:
- EMHS-REC evaluates research ethics applications with a non-health focus that includes vulnerable participants and / or where the possibility of medium or high risk of potential harm to participants exists.
- EMHS-REC is responsible for the evaluation and approval of new research ethics applications, amendments to research projects for which ethical approval has already been given as well as the monitoring of ongoing research projects that have been ethically approved.
- EMHS-REC is responsible for the training of NWU researchers in research ethics.
- EMHS-REC acts immediately when any adverse incidents occur during the research process that may negatively impact on the safety of participants, the researchers and the University’s name.
- EMHS-REC makes recommendations, gives advice and reports to the NHREC and the Research Regulatory Committee (RERC), which is a sub-committee of the NWU Senate. Annual reports are also submitted to the afore mentioned committees.
