Background
The vision of the Centre for African Language Teaching (CALT) is to work together with stakeholders in Education and in the communities served by North-West University (NWU) towards reaching dependable pedagogical solutions for the teaching of literacy (in Setswana). One of the goals that CALT has set for itself is to engage and promote knowledge production and sharing of the teaching and learning African Languages in both Basic and Higher Education. One strategy for this goal is training and engaged scholarship in literacy in Basic and Higher Education.

Aims of the Centre
The establishment of a centre at the NWU with a special focus on strengthening literacy teaching and learning of Setswana
The support of Honours, Master’s and PhD programmes to build capacity among B.Ed teacher educators responsible for teaching reading in Setswana
Support in the training of competent teacher educators who will adequately prepare students for the teaching of reading in Setswana

Generation of assessments in Setswana
Sharing the reading material on Open Educational Resources
Short Learning Programme on teaching reading in the Foundation Phase
