Gender-based violations and trafficking: Human Rights Education in Diversity
Vision:
This special interest group of women scholar-activists in South Africa aims to redress gender-based violations and trafficking that often emanate in societies where economic disempowerment and poverty permeates through a focus on access to education. In the pursuit of girls and womens' equality through education, we engage with controversial issues related to human rights that can undermine sustainable social change.
Mission:
This special interest group of women scholar-activists in South Africa - consisting of researchers, community leaders, NGOs and law practitioners - strives to attain this vision through:
Scholarly engagement with gender taboos and conspiracies that lead to gender –based violations and trafficking and translate these scholarly engagements into activism
A participatory approach in which the women scholar-activists in this group will work towards enhancing womens' equality and human rights
Addressing gender related polemics through education and raise awareness beyond formal education
Suggesting innovative strategies towards sustainable social change for girls and women specific to the South African (post)conflict society (for example; HIV/AIDS, xenophobia, orphaned youth)
